  • Ministry of Sound and Spotify have reportedly reached an amicable agreement following a High Court dust-up over user-generated playlists. Ministry issued legal proceedings after claiming that various playlist were identical in branding and content to their own compilation albums and therefore in breach of copyright.

    Beats Working

    After threatening to “blow Spotify out of the water” last week, Beats Music has confirmed that it will launch in the US on 21st January ahead of the Grammys on the 26th. Unlike other streaming services there is no ongoing free tier- users get a 30-day free trial and are then charged $9.99 per month to access over 20 million licensed tracks from major and independent label catalogues.
  • The BBC is partnering up with Spotify, Deezer and YouTube to deliver ‘Playlister’, a new digital music service set to launch later this week. Although the service has a name that sounds like it fell out of a focus group backwards, it will allow fans to save their favourite tracks played by Auntie into a playlist and to then export them to listen to in full on one of the streaming sites.

    Out of the Blue

    As popular US TV show Breaking Bad comes to an end, sending the Internet into overdrive in the process, Spotify has reported that streams of the track used in the closing scene have increased by 9000%, with digital sales also up by 3000%.

    Tunigo is spot on

    Following Twitter’s acquisition of We Are Hunted in April, Spotify has confirmed that it is also dipping its toes in the music discovery stream with Tunigo. The app has been snapped up to help users navigate Spotify’s catalogue of 20 million tracks.

    Apple unveil iCloud

    Apple has confirmed that they are to unveil the long awaited ‘iCloud’ service during a keynote address at their Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco on June 6.
  • Google has this month stepped up to the cloud by releasing its cloud based digital locker ‘Beta’ music service. In a similar fashion to Amazon's Cloud Player launched in March this year, no licensing deals with labels are presently in place for the service.
