The Fly is Grounded by MAMA

Posted in Learning Zone, News, Publishing by Generator on Wednesday 12th of March 2014

Approximately five minutes after the first ever The Fly Awards, MAMA has abruptly announced that the free monthly magazine is to close after 15 years in business as a result of “current market conditions”. The free publication was launched as a listings leaflet in 1999, evolving into a free magazine that was distributed through a national network of venues, pubs and retailers- in particular HMV after MAMA acquired the doomed high street retailer.

Despite being a market leader for a number of years in the ABCs, circulation plummeted following the closure of many HMV stores to just over 70,000 in August 2013. It is no big reveal that print publications have been spiraling in recent years, with NME dipping below 20,000 in the most recent round of ABC figures.

A statement said: "After nearly 15 years of pioneering new music journalism, the owners of The Fly are officially closing the magazine as a result of current market conditions surrounding publishing".

It continued: “We offer gratitude and wish well all the staff and contributors that have allowed us to deliver the UK's longest serving monthly free sheet. To the multitude of artists and musicians that have graced our covers, the advertisers and sponsors who have supported us and our loyal readers, we salute you".

It was also revealed that long term Editor JJ Dunning has taken ownership of the brand, meaning that The Fly may well live on as an online entity.
