Spotify Flies the Nest

Posted in Digital, Learning Zone, News by Generator on Wednesday 12th of March 2014

In this week’s streaming wars update and hot on the heels of Beats snapping up Topspin, Spotify has announced that it has purchased “music intelligence company” The Echo Nest. The Echo Nest is essentially an algorithm-based music recommendation engine that already powers Spotify Radio. Its all about the science of the song, somewhat fitting for a world in which tech is the new rock n roll and algorithm is the new rhythm.

Spotify says that the purchase supports its strategy to build global music consumption and put overall revenue back into the music industry by improving the music discovery elements of its service.

Founder and CEO of Spotify Daniel Ek said: “We've been fans of The Echo Nest for a really long time and are honoured to have their talented team join Spotify”.

Ek continued: “At Spotify, we want to get people to listen to more music. We are hyper focused on creating the best user experience and it starts with building the best music intelligence platform on the planet. With The Echo Nest joining Spotify, we will make a big leap forward in our quest to play you the best music possible.”
