SPEAR: Transmission

SPEAR: Transmission is a project lead by young people that explores the history of popular music broadcasting in the North East.  The project encompasses research, multi-media production and events for musicians in the region.

SPEAR: Transmission has developed activity that encompasses core elements of learning, live events, mentorship and volunteering.  A short documentary will be filmed which will trace the history of music broadcasting in the region and look towards its future.

A number of emerging artists will be involved in the project that includes mentoring, performance opportunities and collaborative work with film-makers.

Seminar events were launched with our Evolution Festival related Know How seminar 'Transmission' in May 2010, followed by a 'SPEAR:TALK - Transmission' event in Teesside (see notes here), and 2011's 'Transmission' seminar for the Know How - with videos and notes available here.

For reviews of the latest Transmission events please check here and for Tom Robinson's 6Music blog on the event click here.

Events have included a Transmission event at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle in 2010, a special 'Tom Robinson presents' gig, 'Split Transmission', many seminars and a special 'Huw Stephens presents' gig in May 2011.

And Transmission's Sound & Vision project teams regional artists, remixers and film-makers to produce industry standard music videos.

Together with our young persons steering group, and with support from students at Gateshead College, Transmission has also filmed exclusive interviews with many key figures in broadcasting.  Footage will be available at future events and will be compiled into a full documentary in the near future.

Keep checking back for details of upcoming events and additional projects.

We are looking for more young people to get involved on a voluntary basis and volunteer roles include:-

  • Undertaking oral history training
  • Researching key broadcasting organisations and figures
  • Conducting interviews with identified people
  • Using research material to feed into film-making
  • Assisting in the production of associated Transmission events
