Exclusive live sets from the current crop of UMT Academy VOX and BEATS graduates

Keine Kunst inauguration night, with special guest: Pat Mandu

Get your dancing shoes ready for the launch of a new monthly club night run by previous UMT BEATS graduate Yaron Golan.

Keine Kunst @ Studio 16, first Friday of every month.

The music policy is very simple: the odd special guest, with resident DJs bringing you the best in both old and cutting edge disco, house, techno, jazz, afrobeat and their nigh on endless variants, and whatever else we find interesting. Emphasis on having a great sound system, nice people and a fun atmosphere, in the city centre, but spiritually as far removed from city-centre night clubs as possible.

And as if a new night wasn’t good enough in itself, we have a new venue, too. Studio 16 is located underground, in a basement underneath the NewBridge Project Space, and built exactly the way nightclubs should be: not too big, intimate, dark.

For our first night we’re excited to welcome a special guest, Pat Mandu (previously of Road to Rimini and Endless Race), an avid record collector who always has his finger on the pulse of dance music and an undeniable ear for a good groove. Warming up for Pat will be our resident, Yaron.

To give you an idea of what to expect, here’s a recording of Pat Mandu warming up for Bill Brewster at Endless Race a couple of years ago:

Newcastle Drum and Bass Awards

Newcastle is preparing to host the region’s first dedicated Drum and Bass awards ceremony. Simon Turner and Mat Taylor came up with the idea while presenting their weekly live radio show NewcastleBeats on the community station NE1FM 102.5; Thursdays from 8-10pm. They have teamed up with the DJs behind the OneHourOneDj website to create an event that is truly unique. People can vote for their favourite artists online and the results will be announced during a live outside broadcast at Nancy’s Bordello.

The event is free and will feature entertainment from some of the local scene’s DJ talent before and after the show. You can expect acceptance speeches worthy of the Oscars, homemade awards and some good laughs. (Popular rural drama “The Archers” of radio 4 has been nominated for best radio show alongside the likes of DJ Friction’s radio one broadcast.) Other categories include best local event, best new producer and the baffling but contentious “best pasty.” This event is open to everybody so if you’re a fan of drum and bass, baked goods and general silliness, get yourself down to Nancy’s Bordello on the 21st of February. (Doors open at 7PM with live broadcast starting from 8pm). You can cast your votes here and listen to the live event and help support your local community radio by listening to NE1fm on 102.5FM and

The NewcastleBeatsShow is broadcast live every Thursday from 8pm-10pm.

MOBO Industry Takeover comes to Newcastle

MOBO Tour 2012 landed on our fair Geordie shores on Monday 27th February and for those of you who couldn’t make it down we’ve rounded up the day and found some top tips from the panels:

     Mobo Takeover

Here at UMT we’re very proud to have been part of the Industry Takeover and having the MOBO Tour shedding light on the small but vibrant urban scene here in Newcastle. Not only was this the first time that the MOBO Tour has come up to NewcastleGateshead bringing the Industry Takeover with it but an event of this size is quite possibly the biggest thing to happen to the North East urban and electronic scene ever.

And what a turn out we had!

We had folk queuing up to get face time with our special guests and workshops were rammed with urban artists eager to take away some real gems to fast-track their careers in the music industry from our expert panels.

      Mobo panel

(Sian Anderson, Liam Tootill, Wayne C McDonald, Smoove & Smiler)

Step Up Your Game - Liam Tootill (SBTV); ‘it's more important for an emerging artist to build personal relationships than paying for PR’

How To Steal My Job - Steve Andrews (Tour Manager); ‘Don’t ever think you can’t do it… If you don’t knock on the door nobody will know you’re there’

Star In The Hood - Liam Tootill (SBTV); ‘Believe in yourself and people will believe in you’
Smiler (Rapper/MC) on ‘Can your accent hold you back?’; ‘Make the most of your own scene’
Smiler; ‘Be hungry, but don’t be desperate’ when getting your music out there
Wayne C McDonald (UMT) on the North East scene and making it big; ‘Network people … use the internet, there’s a world out there. Jump in feet first.

After 3 workshops and 2 seminars, we’d barely even started! The MOBO Tour moved over to the O2 Academy, Newcastle for a free night of the finest emerging urban music in the UK right now.

          Josh Osho

(Josh Osho)

Josh Osho went down well as ever – his acoustic band and smooth tunes were a real hit with the ladies.

Smiler, Cleo Sol & Josh Osho

(Smiler, Cleo Sol & Josh Osho)

Cleo Sol was stunning with her summery Mowtown vibe.

(Clement Marfo & the Frontline)

Clement Marfo & The Frontline were unreal – the full live band went down really well with the Newcastle crowd.

MOBO Unsung Newcastle winner Chris 4Sit’s set impressed and XTN showed what Teesside has to offer.

But we reckon that it was Lady Leshurr that stole the show.

Thanks to everyone who came down and made the day the success for the urban scene on your doorstep!

 Introducing: Gordon Bruce

Meet Gordon - a UMT production graduate from the class of 2011 as well as 1/5 of Newcastle's Shift-Static

You may have recently seen Shift-Static featured on Generator's Tipping Point blog - the guys are known for their masterful blend of the electronic with the human - creating glitchy, unsettling sonic canvases which they've turned into a entrancing new EP. Which, by the way, has been excellently mixed and mastered by UMT tutor Danny Linton.

But not satisfied with one music project on the go Gordon is currently working on remixes for Edinburgh based band Blank Canvas as well as being commissioned by 100% Records for a Zebra and Snake remix (both released end of February - so stay tuned), writing for Tiny Mixtapes, AND DJing at No Globe Club in his native Edinburgh!

Oh and he's also in the midst of completing his Masters degree.

He's a busy lad but thankfully he found time to chat to us about his time at UMT Academy and what drew him to our course...

'After seeing posters for UMT all over Newcastle I decided to get in touch (it's really easy) - seeing the course as a good opportunity to meet some likeminded people in the North East' - and he wasn't disappointed. Gordon says:

'The best part was meeting a class group of people (including the tutors) who were all down to earth and all addicted to making music! The relaxed atmosphere of the studio meant everyone could have a laugh as well as interacting and learning from each other's skills.'

On the production side of things Gordon says that 'I learnt how to properly get my head into mixing, listening to other tracksand picking out the clever techniques people use to get their tunes sounding that bit sweeter.

I also learnt useful nuggets of information that you might think are insignificant if teaching yourself but they actually make a huge amount of difference. I learnt a lot of the foundations that allowed me to go home and build on my production skills much quicker than I would have done previously.'

On the DJing side 'I was a complete novice - just spending time with the equipment helped me learn what music works well together, how to get started with beat matching and how to drop in some occasionally tasteful, mostly over the top, effect.'

Take a peek at Gordon putting what he learnt to use here when he Dj'd at No Globe Club's New Year party.

If you're feeling inspired by Gordon and fancy producing and remixing your own music then take a look at more information on our UMT:PRO course.
